‘Zorro’ has bash at fundraising

IT takes them all year to get ready for their 11-day adventure taking part in the Variety B to B Bash but a group of Padstow residents wouldn’t have it any other way.

Anita Baker, brother-in-law Colin Baker and friend Debbra Eaton took part in their 14th Bash, driving their 60 Series 1987 Landcruiser under team banner ‘Zorro’.
They stepped into the original 1985 Basher’s tracks this year, following the route from Bourke to Charleville, Windorah to Birdsville, Mount Isa to Burketown and finally Mudgee and Bombira where the adventure ended yesterday.
Spending last Thursday in Birdsville, they enjoyed a surprise visit from Bash founder Dick Smith who fuelled them with extra inspiration in their desire to improve the lives of sick children.
Over the years, ‘Zorro’ has raised close to $150,000 but Anita says they have no plans to stop going.
“Each team must commit to raising $8,500 and you’ve got to cover petrol and repair costs but it is just so much fun and rewarding knowing you are helping sick kids,” she said.
The Bashers meet at a checkpoint for meals usually in community centres or schools which provide the catering paid for by Variety.
At night, they usually camp out but some motel accommodation is provided.
Anita says the Bash convoy is always a big hit driving through the towns.
“The teams often donate sporting gear or books which the communities love and there is just so much camaraderie among the teams to enjoy along the way,” she said.
“Once you start Bashing, you don’t want to stop as you make lifelong friends and it was also great this year, to welcome 60 virgin Bashers.”
