Nominations are now open for the Zero Barriers Business Excellence Awards 2023, with Berala’s Pinnacle Early Education among those leading the way.
Hosted by the Multicultural Network, the awards recognise businesses and services that have made an exceptional commitment to be more accessible and inclusive of their whole community.
Pinnacle Director Diana Chohaili says that being an early education provider for all children, including those with special needs, they were among the first to become truly accessible when they opened their doors two years ago.
“Our wide entrances are suitable for people in a wheelchair and we have all wide doorways and a lift to our second storey, two disabled toilets and disability car parking plus there are no steps anywhere,” she said.
Diana says the rooms include quiet corner nooks for children to avoid sensory overload and they also offer a range of sensory activities.
“One of our children has autism and she found it difficult to sit still during group activities so we introduced a sensory vibration pillow which she loves and it supports her during these times,” she said.
Diana said she was proud her business was an accredited Zero Barriers provider and encouraged others to get on board.
“Even making small changes to ensure your business environment is inclusive can make a big difference to those who need extra support,” she said.
Businesses can self-nominate for an award or be nominated by the public.
The awards will be held on June 6, with all businesses and services encouraged to take the online self-assessment beforehand and nominate for an award at zerobarriers.net.au.
With free membership, award nominations close 5pm, Friday, May 19.
