Youth raise $5,403 in quake relief

LIDCOMBE Public School’s Mufti Day has raised $5,403 to help ease the suffering of families affected by the devastating earthquakes in Turkiye and Syria last month.

The funds were raised via gold coin donations from the students as well as the sale of Turkish treats during the day to students and after school to parents.
This followed the school’s donation of new blankets and sleeping bags to Auburn Mosque for inclusion in the shipping container sent to Turkiye earlier in the month.
Principal Matt Lewis said two of his student leaders, Tuba and Mirhat, along with their Turkish language class and teacher Mrs Tokyurek, approached him about the Mufti Day fundraiser and he had no hesitation in supporting it.
“I have to say I am tremendously proud that our students are not only up to date with current world news, but show the heart to care and do something positive to help,” he said.
“We have extremely well brought up children at this school and I congratulate our parents for the wonderful job they are doing.”
The funds have been donated to UNICEF.
