Young martial artists kick way to boost fun, skill

WITH their parents and carers watching safely from home, 120 young martial artists from Lidcombe’s Kick After School were graded for their Kenpo 5.0 belts last Sunday.

Setting up four cameras to stream the process live via Zoom, Kicks founder, fifth degree black belt and the head Australian representative for Jeff Speakman’s Kenpo 5.0, David Giovenco said grading in smaller groups over five hours and going online were just some of the ways they have adapted to be able to operate safely within the pandemic.
He said after being forced to shut down classes, they opted to go “100 per cent virtual” and offer free beginner classes to keep kids focused during lockdown.
“It was great to see the kids get rewarded and progress to next level and show that ‘never give up’ attitude, especially during these unprecedented times,” he said.
“I could not be prouder of their achievement and the dedication they have shown all year. A special mention goes to the instructor team, it would not have been possible without you.”
Mr Giovenco admits that when he opened Kicks in 2013, he had “no idea” what he was doing but wanted to provide a safe place for his own daughter and other children to go to after school where they could do their homework and also learn martial arts.
