Young Jiu Jitsu fighters sixth best in nation

WELL on their way to achieving their goal of creating a world champion, Auburn’s Sydney Wrestling Academy (SWA) picked up 14 national titles at the Australian Federation of Brasilian Jiu Jitsu Championships last month in Melbourne.

The children’s team finished sixth overall, a huge achievement considering their program has only been running for a year, according to academy founders Lucas Kanard and brothers Ali and Adel Elkheir.
“Each competition had well over 1,000 entrants so we’ve done amazingly well,” Lucas said.
“Special mention must also go to Issa Issa, who achieved his first title as a purple belt as well as Hajaar Mooti, who demonstrates a particularly strong focus daily.
“These achievements are a testament to our athletes’ skills and the strong sense of community we’ve built here at our gym.”
Open seven days a week to the public with back-to-back wrestling and jiu jitsu classes three times a week for children, adults and women only, SWA also features professional strength and conditioning equipment including sleds, assault bikes, power racks, benches, barbells, bumper plates, dumbbells, kettlebells, pull up bars, dip bars and olympic rings.
Lucas said the classes were ideal for children as they were inspiring and included an anti-bullying element.
“The classes are very nurturing and great for self-esteem and health as you learn physical literacy skills and become a more confident person,” he said.
