Teana Bourke was named ‘National Champion Advanced Senior Freestyle’ while Abdurahman Abdullah was named ‘National Champion Intermediate Senior Freestyle’.
Y Bankstown Gymnastics Manager Jessica Mavridis said the competition was split into two disciplines – Speed and Freestyle.
“Speed is where athletes complete an obstacle course as quickly as possible without hitting lava zones and missing checkpoints,” she said.
“Freestyle is where athletes create a freestyle routine using different obstacles that incorporates gymnastics, parkour, martial arts, tumbling and trampoline elements.
“To see them do their dynamic routines is amazing, so incredible, just like you see in the movies.”
Coach Michael Bastion said it was exciting to see Teana and Abdurahman get what they deserve – national championships.
“They both got rewarded for their creativity, style and flow, which set them apart from the other competitors. I am very proud of them.”
Teana said: “Competing at Nationals was such an amazing experience. It was nice to know that all my training paid off. When my name was announced, it felt so good, especially to beat all the boys.”
Abdurahman said: “I was relieved when I was called up as National Champion because I worked so hard for it.”
