Writers back for festival

FINDING inspiration even in the midst of the pandemic, the Auburn Poets and Writers’ (APW) performance group are more than ready for this year’s Sydney Writers Festival.

While acknowledging the topic is inescapable and exploring the irony of the counter-intuitive messaging to the public as referenced by the show’s title ‘How distance can keep us together’, they also didn’t want to be trapped by the pandemic with works also examining family and friendship.
Debuting at the festival in 2006, just a year after the group began, APW coordinator Danny Gardner joined in time for the 2008 event and said every show has had its own highlights, as well as presenting challenges to overcome.
He said during a bus tour of Auburn with the audience on-board as they presented poems and stories at stops en route, the power went out at Auburn Railway Park and they had to perform using car headlights.
“‘Grandma’s Bed’ at Granville was probably our most cohesive production in song, poem and story,” he said.
“‘Mars’ in 2019 – at the last SWF – was a hoot – when we all took a tablet and got into the capsule for the Big Beyond – metaphorically of course.”
APW cast members Seher Aydinlik, Tatiana Bonch, Yasemin Dolcel, Danny Gardner, Neera Handa, Trish Jean, Mark Marusic, Michaela Simoni and Willem Tibben will perform at the Auburn Centre For Community from 7pm on Thursday, April 29.
