Revesby Uniting Church Minister, Reverend Michael Barnes, said the congregation put up a rainbow banner at Mardi Gras time each year.
“Our church is progressive and inclusive, and welcomes everyone,” he said.
“Unfortunately our message of welcome to the LGBTIQ community has been defaced twice in the past two weeks.”
However Rev Barnes said they had been heartened by messages of support, including one person who offered to patch up the banner using love hearts with the words ‘We stand with Revesby Uniting’ as well as an offer to raise funds for a new gay pride banner.
“Some people might wrongly assume that because we are a church, we are conservative,” he said.
“We’d like to show that we are different, and we thank the community for supporting us.”
Anyone with any information about the vandalism is asked to contact Bankstown Police, 9783 2199 or Crime Stoppers, 1800 333 000.
