Try theft twice in three days

AFTER two attempted ram-raids at an Auburn jewellery store (picture) in just three days, police say they are pursuing “strong lines of inquiry”.

Detective Inspector Karl Leis from Auburn Police said the incidents were of concern but added that the community could be reassured that they were actively pursuing the investigation and had increased patrols in the area.
“I would strongly suggest that the persons involved in these incidents hand themselves into police before we come knocking on your door,” he said.
Just after 5am on Tuesday, February 2, emergency services were called to the corner of Auburn Road and Mary Street after reports that a small truck had reversed into the jewellery store and the driver had left the scene. It follows a similar incident involving a Hino truck reversing into the same store at 12.45am on Sunday, January 31.
Fleeing the scene of the first crash, the unidentified truck driver was picked up by a vehicle which was waiting nearby and Inspector Leis said their actions on both occasions, were deliberate and dangerous.
“Anyone engaging in this type of criminal behaviour can expect to be dealt with by the full force of the law,” he said.
No items were reported stolen during either incident.
A Fire and Rescue NSW spokesperson said firefighters had assessed the building’s structural integrity following the latest incident and no injuries were reported.
Nearly 90 minutes after the crash, a nearby worker told the Review that the truck was still sitting against the awning around the building.
“You could still hear the reversing alarm, the warning beeps, coming from the truck,” she said.
“The police had the intersection all closed off and they were diverting traffic.”
Anyone with any information about the crash is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
