Women smash foe to win first game of year

IN a good omen for 2024, Bankstown Sports Women’s Cricket Club’s First Grade enjoyed a fantastic win on Sunday against a strong Sydney side.

On a slow wicket due to the heat, Bankstown lost three early wickets. However a partnership between Emily Lawler and Stella Wilde guided Bankstown to 113.  Pick of batters was Stella Wilde with a patient innings of 42 (101).
Amy Hunter took out Sydney’s opener in her first over before all pitched in to keep Sydney to 92.
Amy, 5/14 off 4.5, was well supported by Karina Bell, 3/17 off 6.
Second Grade, however, had a tough loss.
UTS took three quick wickets. Ellie Newsom (41 runs), Aleisha Rutherford and Zoe Wood stabilised the innings, contributing to 159.
Ava Blackburn, Sunshine Ferreiro-De Luca and Elizabeth Buckley, started the bowling strongly, leaving UTS 5 down for 38 runs. Unfortunately, only one other wicket fell and UTS chased down the runs.
Massive thanks to Greer McKerron, (making an excellent debut) Rylka Smythe and Zoe Wood who filled in.
Third Grade had a close game against Gordon.
Bankstown kept Gordon to a chaseable 3 wickets for 85 runs off 20 overs; Steph Kelly took 2 wickets for 15 off 3 overs.
Heading into bat, Bankstown lost 3 wickets in quick succession. Opener Caroline Layt supported by Denbigh Morris, scored 29 not out and 25 respectively but they ended with 4 wickets for 78 runs off 20 overs.
