Women fall short in tussle despite effort

THE hard-hitting Erin Burns smashed 48 off 39 balls in the first grade march against Penrith.

THEY won the toss but it was not long before Bankstown Sports Women’s Cricket 1st Grade bowlers realised they were in for a battle against Penrith due to the sticky, damp wicket and the wild and windy conditions on Sunday.

The opening pair from Penrith amassed 103 runs before the fall of the first wicket to Samantha Devlin (2/6) but the pair had already laid a great platform and set Bankstown Sports at 148 for victory.
Although 1st Grade were 1/15 at one stage, the batting unit did not give up.
Erin Burns hit a well composed 48 off 39 balls and was again partnered for much of her innings by Tahlia Dunne who scored 20.
Needing 12 an over, enter Jade Errington who kept Bankstown in the game by hitting to all parts including a monster 6 where the ball was lost and needed to be replaced.
Jade did all she could and finished with 32 off 16 balls but unfortunately Bankstown Sports fell 8 runs short, finishing their innings at 6/140.
Bankstown Sports Women’s Cricket Club 2nd Grade side also went down to be more experienced Penrith Cricket Club team who chased down Bankstown Sports total of 5/82 in 9.5 overs.
Emily Lawler 48 (64) and Maeve Martin 15no (21) were the key contributors after Penrith put Bankstown Sports into bat.
Unfortunately, Bankstown Sports were unable to keep the sundries down, giving Penrith 24 extra runs to see them home in the 10th over.
