Women face challenging opener

THEY were full of promise but Bankstown Sports Women’s Cricket Club First Grade had a challenging start to the season.

After winning the toss and electing to bowl first, an initial breakthrough came through debutant Kirsty McColl, who finished with 1-25 and was well supported by another debutant, Sunshine Ferreiro-De Luca with 2-19.
Chasing a target of 169 runs, openers Tahlia Dunne and Jade Errington made a strong start but the total proved too big, finishing with 115 off the allotted 20 overs.  Worthy contributions came from Emma Newman (23 off 30) and Jade Errington (22 off 23).
BSWCC 2nd Grade had a more positive start, winning their first match against Sydney Universities.
Emillia Danne and Elizabeth Buckley started the innings off strong, forming a 50-run partnership, with special mention to Aleisha Rutherford scoring 17 off 12, providing a total of 126.
Also strong were bowlers Cynthia Coghlan, Ava Blackburn, Madison Rutherford and Elizabeth Buckley.
BSWCC Third Grade had a good start to the season against UTS North Sydney.
Although not being able to beat the score of 4-229 set by UTS, the team went out and played the full 40 overs and reached a respectable 7-178.
Special mention to Caroline Layt who scored 53 not out off 66 balls, totalling seven 4s in her outstanding innings.
BSWCC U18 Brewer Shield, with five debutants, had a testing start to the season against the Southern Swans.
Chasing a total of 115 runs, unfortunately the openers got out early. However, Ava Gaughan, a debutant, scored runs with amazing technique, finishing with 33 runs off 49.
However, Bankstown was unable to chase down the runs, and lost with a decent 5-97 off 20 overs.
