In December 2021, a 23-year-old man was charged by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) in relation to alleged fraudulent applications made against Government financial relief schemes related to the Covid-19 pandemic and natural disasters, estimated to the value of $150,150.
In October 2022, detectives attached to the State Crime Command’s Cybercrime Squad commenced a further investigation under Strike Force Malton, following allegations the man had received data from a NSW Government employee.
Following inquiries, strike force investigators executed a search warrant at a unit on the Hume Highway, Bankstown, about 6.20am on Thursday, November 3, where they allegedly seized a number of items, including electronic equipment, a mobile phone and other documentation which underwent forensic examination.
A 22-year-old woman arrested at the unit was charged with one count of deal in identification info and use it to commit fraud.
Police will allege in court the woman was an employee of a state government agency and accessed personal data which was then shared with the 23-year-old man to make fraudulent applications in the Government financial relief schemes.
