Now in its 18th year, the exhibition invites students in Years 5 and 6 to showcase both their artistic talent and their connection to their faith.
Along with the selected entries from the Dioceses of Bathurst and Wollongong, and Catholic students from government schools, 493 artworks were submitted for judging this year, with 100 being displayed at the exhibition and 23 being awarded prizes, with Luke awarded the Executive Director’s Trophy for ’The Star Leads the Way’.
Luke said his artwork, portraying the Magi’s (three wise men) journey to Bethlehem in search of Jesus, was inspired by the idea of togetherness and friendship.
“The Magi are loyal, dedicated and work well as a team, qualities which reflect the relationship I have with my best mates who alway stand up for me and stick together,” he said.
“I was influenced by Vincent Van Gogh’s Starry Night adopting a similar colour scheme and flowing lines, which highlight the beautiful cityscape of Bethlehem.”
Wise men painting a winner
SOME of the State’s most exciting young artistic talents, including Regina Coeli Catholic Primary School Beverly Hills student Luke Grilis, were on display as the 2023 Christmas Story Art Exhibition and Competition opened at the University of Notre Dame earlier this month.
