Wins photography prize with station sunset snap

A PHOTOGRAPH of a passing train taken near Lakemba train station, has won the 2019 Where Interesting Happens photo competition.

Locals entered the competition with a photo published each week in the Canterbury Bankstown Torch for a year, capturing the unique character of our city.
James Stamparidis took the winning photograph at sunset near Lakemba train station after learning about the competition through the quarterly Community Link newsletter.
“I had a look at what won last year online and was trying to think, what could I do that would be unique” he said.
“I had the camera in the car with the family and decided to do a quick pit stop near the local train station where I saw a potential sunset opportunity.
“There was a bridge near the station and I set up to take a photo of the sunset, with my camera on a tripod and used my filter kit to create a long exposure photo of the train going past to blur the motion.”
Mayor Khal Asfour and General Manager of the Canterbury Bankstown Torch, Trent Engisch, presented James with a gift voucher for two custom canvases.
A display of all the published photos in the Torch, including those of the 12 finalists’, are on display at Campsie Library and Knowledge Centre until Sunday, February 23.
