Wins Australia Day Honour for service

PICNIC Point’s Gloria Hansen has won a staggering amount of awards in her capacity as a school volunteer but she was still shocked to discover she had been awarded an OAM for service to the community and to youth as a foster carer.
She was among 845 Australians who were recognised on the Australia Day 2021 Honours List, 371 of whom received an OAM.

Having two daughters, Gloria, now 70, has also cared for 23 foster children, was the Revesby Blue Light Disco founder and has been a P&C volunteer, holding offices as treasurer and president, at Revesby Public, Picnic Point Public and Picnic Point High schools, for over 45 years.
She won the East Hills Local Woman of the Year Award in 2012, Minister’s Award for Volunteering in 2010, a NSW Premier’s Award in 2010, a Local Community Service Award in 2008 and has been granted life membership to the P & C Association.
“Everything I do I seem to get very involved in and take it further than the norm,” she said.
“I started Revesby Blue Light disco since my girls needed somewhere safe to go and I’ve always helped out at the schools as much as possible because I believe schools hold our future.
“The Education Department is good but it doesn’t provide funds for all the extras so fundraising has been a big drive of mine as I want to make our community a better place.
“You don’t volunteer for recognition; to me, it’s been an absolute honour.”
Having to slow down in 2020 due to Covid, Gloria is looking forward to a better year.
“There’s a lot of fundraising to be done,” she said with a laugh.
