And residents will be encouraged to decorate their homes and show the rest of Sydney the spirit of Christmas is very much alive.
The council will also mark the festive season by installing Christmas trees and lights across seven suburbs.
A council spokesperson said this Christmas would be extra special after being locked down for much of the year.
“It’s wonderful to see Christmas decorations already popping up in stores across the City,” she said.
“People are really looking forward to celebrating with family and friends.”
To help residents get into the spirit, the council is running a competition to find the best decorated house and will be awarding prizes of up to $500.
“I know parents do the drive around with the kids to see all the colourful Christmas lights, so we want to find the best lights on in town,” the spokesperson said.
“We’ll be looking for the most outstanding Christmas displays, it’s not just about the lights but the most creative and engaging display.”
The competition to find the best decorated house opened today (Wednesday, December 1).
Town centres will also be decorated and seven larger-than-life Christmas trees will be installed over the coming weeks at: Paul Keating Park, Bankstown; Collins Street, Belmore; ANZAC Mall (in front of the clock tower), Campsie; corner Waldron and Chester Hill roads, Chester Hill; Earlwood shops, Homer Street and Joy Avenue, Earlwood; McGuigan Place, off Waterloo Road, Greenacre; and Abel Reserve, Marco Avenue, Revesby.
To launch the Christmas season, a virtual lighting ceremony will be live streamed from Paul Keating Park this Thursday at 8pm.
