In a first for the council, lopped eucalyptus and bamboo branches will not go to waste and instead, be set aside for collection by zoo staff.
“It’s a great initiative which will benefit both the zoo and our council,” Mayor Khal Asfour said.
“We’ll be taking the eucalyptus and the bamboo from our lopping and instead of putting it in the mulcher, we will be feeding our furry friends at the zoo.
“It makes a lot of sense, as council lops a lot of trees near power lines and the juiciest shoots won’t go to waste.”
Mayor Asfour said the agreement was a win for both organisations.
“By removing old eucalyptus trees, the quality of life for newer trees will be improved and the koalas and red pandas will be the winners,” he said.
“Their removal will also reduce the bushfire hazard close to housing.”
We’re branching out to help feed zoo’s hungry koalas, red pandas
