Welcome $9.5m mosque boost to cater for growth

A NEW $9.5 million mosque has been planned for Guildford with the existing nearby facility now too small.

The Masjid Assalam Mosque has operated for more than 10 years on the Marian Street site “but it now can’t accommodate or facilitate our local community and there was always a plan to upgrade and expand,” says spokesperson Hajj Hussein.
The new two-storey facility, which will be built on the car park of the existing prayer hall in Macarthur Street and able to accommodate up to 300 people, will include men’s and women’s prayer rooms, religious triangle rooms, caretaker’s dwelling and parking. It could be built within two years after approval.
Funded by the worshippers and local community, the project will also employ many locals.
“The need for this prayer hall is called upon by our local community and will be an asset to the area,” Mr Hussein said.
“The worshippers bring peace, humility and calm to the community not to mention how they support and provide to local families in hard times especially running programs for children to enrich their future.
“We and the community are very excited to be able to provide a new prayer hall for the community.”
Mr Hussein says they have also carried extensive traffic and parking reviews “with a very positive report” to help allay any concerns.
Cr Steve Christou welcomed the plan, saying the group makes a fantastic contribution to the area through its charity and community work.
