Wedded bliss over 70 years

THE third oldest Socceroo at 94, Bill Henderson and wife Margaret, 91, have received an outpouring of congratulations, including from Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and King Charles, to help celebrate their Platinum (70th) Wedding Anniversary.

Married at Granville Presbyterian on February 6, 1954 (pictured), the couple raised daughters, Debra, Suzanne and Leanne, surrounded by Bill’s ‘football family’.
“We had so many good friends all around us and those happy days just continued,” Margaret said.
Bill and his father Andrew were the first, if not only, father coach and son player on Australia’s international test team against South Africa in 1955.
Two years later in 1957, he and brother Andrew left Granville Magpies and went over to Auburn Football Club, helping them win their first grand final.
Bill said it was wonderful when years later the Football Federation of Australia presented all past Socceroos with a replica of the jumper worn by the first Australian team in 1922.
“Dad was Socceroo Cap No 29 and I was No 128,” he said.
Still an avid fan, Bill enjoys watching Western Sydney Wanderer games and was impressed with Sydney FC when they gave Socceroos their own box from which to enjoy every game.
“I also support the Granville Waratahs and go to all of their games,” he said.
Granville Waratah President Noel Dona said: “Bill and Margaret Henderson achieving a 70th wedding anniversary is truly a triumph of commitment, devotion, dedication and love for each other.”
Now grandparents to four and great-grandparents to 10, Bill and Margaret say a strong friendship is the basis for a long marriage.
“We’ve just been lucky with our health and each other; we are very happy,” Margaret added.
