Walk your way to health, happiness

WALKING is known to have many benefits for our physical and mental health, but why not walk and be recognised for doing a good job?

The Heart Foundation Walking Groups are free to join and offer recognition for the number of walks each member achieves, starting from certificates for 25 walks up to a 5,000 Walks Club Member T Shirt.
Recently celebrating its 10th anniversary, the Stockland Merrylands Heart Foundation Walkers meet on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays at 7.45am and is designed for older retired people who prefer walking on level ground in a safe environment.
That way you’re not being affected by weather conditions and there is undercover parking nearby.
Walkers are encouraged to walk as many laps of the Mall as they can manage at their own pace.
Meeting at a Stockland cafe for coffee and a chat after each morning walk is a popular social event.
Walker Brian Duane says some members walk once a week, others walk on all four mornings but there is no pressure to have to be there every walking day.
“Some members have had difficulty walking one full lap when they first join but with a little commitment to walk at least twice a week, they soon notice some improvement,” he said.
“The walking has definitely kept me going and you can’t deny the physical and mental benefits.”
