Walk to school and do it safely

ST MEL’S Catholic Primary School participated in Walk Safely to School Day, encouraging students and parents to consider walking to school as part of a healthy, active way to get around.

Students wore a “splash of yellow” and enjoyed a healthy piece of fruit as they arrived safely at school. Each child also applied a Walk Safely to School Day tattoo, which they loved and proudly wore.
Year 6 and Kindergarten students participated in a buddy activity where they learnt about crossing the road safely and the importance of holding an adult’s hand.
As part of this safety campaign, parents received a Road Safety Tips brochure, which included safe school zone information and how to safely access St Mel’s car line.
Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander, Assistant Commissioner Brett McFadden said education is the first step to protecting vulnerable road users from being hurt or killed on the roads.
“Our roads are unpredictable settings that everyone needs to be cautious and vigilant around,” Assistant Commissioner McFadden said.
“Giving our children the awareness skills to be conscious of their surroundings is giving them vital self-protection skills that can prevent them from being seriously injured.
“They also need to have the confidence to know how to navigate traffic and roads which is why this initiative is so important.”
