Volunteers needed to to get more on move

CONDUCTING over 70,000 trips for more than 3,000 clients, Bankstown Canterbury Community Transport (BCCT) has notched up another busy yet challenging year over the impact of Covid-19.

The not-for-profit organisation provides affordable and accessible transport to Canterbury Bankstown Local Government Area residents who have specific transport needs related to their age, disability or impairment.
Classified as an ‘essential service’, BCCT staff had to make a number of adjustments to maintain services.
“While we temporarily suspended outings in March, as restrictions eased, we were able to recommence from July at outdoor venues,” BCCT executive officer Rachel Thompson said.
“We have also worked with local libraries to offer an innovative service where instead of taking people to the library, we bring the books to them.”
When social outings couldn’t be provided, staff instead were tasked with calling on clients to check on their welfare and combat loneliness.
“We greatly appreciate the enthusiasm that our volunteers bring to the organisation and would love to hear from more who are interested in volunteering and making a difference to others,” Ms Thompson added.
BCCT is looking: Vehicle assistants (accompanying elderly and vulnerable clients on social, medical and shopping trips); Office assistants (reception, answering phones, taking client bookings, translating for non-English speaking clients, filing, computer work and office duties); and Wellbeing Calling Program volunteers (phoning clients and providing social engagement, including with non-English speaking people).
