Vale to community hero and an inspiration to all

THERE would be few residents who have not bought a raffle ticket or been to a fashion parade or bought a $5 bag of books from the BEHHA op shop that Joan Wagstaff – who has passed away aged 86 – did not have a hand in somehow.

The Padstow resident’s children, Kylie, Todd and David, can’t recall a time when their mum wasn’t organising a fundraising activity of one kind or another.
Joan’s service to the community began in her role as a registered nurse at St George, working at Sutherland where she met husband Allen (deceased) and then a long tenure at Bankstown Hospital.
Her contribution has been enormous – from fundraising for schools and scouts, to revitalising the Queen of Bankstown Quest and raising nearly $2 million for the Children’s Hospital, Joan’s work has had a lasting impact.
Recognised as Bankstown Citizen of the Year in 1982 and an Order of Australia Medal in 1991, the avid golfer was truly inspirational, according to Torch Publishing Managing Director John Engisch OAM.
“Joan will be missed by so many because of how much she did for everyone over the years,” Mr Engisch said.
Also survived by grandchildren Lucinda, Jade and Makai, Joan’s funeral will be held on Wednesday, June 8, from 12.30pm at Rookwood Crematorium.
