Undefeated U16s in historic season

THE first team to make the NSW Champion of Champions tournament in over 20 years, Merrylands Soccer Football Club U16s Division 1 Boys have enjoyed an historic 2023 season.

They won the Granville & Districts Soccer Football Association’s U16/1 Grand Final but went down 3-1 in the NSW Champion of Champions to be runner up against Enfield FC – the only match they lost this year.
Club President John Panaretto said while it was disappointing they didn’t win the Champion of Champions, the team’s results have been outstanding.
“We are extremely proud of them as it’s the first time in over two decades we have made a Champion of Champions Grand Final, previously winning the title in 1983 (U12/B), 1984 (U/9), 1985 (U/10), and 2002 (O/35 Men),” he said.
Coach Mustafa al-Jaboore said: “The boys did exceptionally well with many playing together for the first time this year and gave it their all, although the score line didn’t reflect that.
“I believe nerves got in the way, as it was a big game for all of us, however we are thrilled with what they have achieved both on the pitch and off.”
A family-oriented club, Merrylands caters for U6s players and female only teams through to All Age divisions, with 2024 registrations opening in February.
“Our coaches and managers are predominantly parents of players,” Panaretto said.
“But we also have committee members whose children no longer play for the club yet continue to stay involved with the sole purpose of ensuring that as many people as possible can experience this beautiful game.”
