First Grade also won the Sir Roden Cutler Shield.
Playing Sydney University at their home ground was always going to be difficult, with the Two Blues being heavy outsiders and nobody expected them to win.
Two Blues Rugby Operations Manager Randy Basra said they started the game getting to a fast 14-0 lead with a try to winger Nik Vikena and another try to top scorer Rilloy Suesue (his 10th of the season).
“Sydney University scored and we exchanged penalty kicks too; at half time, the score with 17-10 to us,” he said.
The game exploded into life with the referee showing Two Blues players four yellow cards in total and three of them all at the same time, for reasons they are still trying to figure out.
Amazingly, in that period Two Blues had only had 12 players on field yet scored another try, with each matched each by Sydney University.
Basra said that at the 80th minute, the scores were 31-31 but a brilliant break from the forwards and a poor University line-out, saw Two Blues score the match-winning try and stay in the top six.
“The games in all three of our senior grades really showed the culture that has been created by our coaches and managers to instil a never-give-up attitude,” Basra said.
Two Blues defy odds to win all senior games against top
IN a weekend of defying the odds, Western Sydney Two Blues Rugby Union’s First (38-31) and Second Grades (33-29) and Women’s side (29-24) – for the first time this century – won all matches against the current Shute Shield champions.
