Treating community for 40 years

THE worst thing about covid for Vi Dermott-Powell was that there were no Riverwood Markets which she looked forward to every month.

A long-term cake stall holder, the 92-year-old said it was a relief when they returned at the start of the year.
Baking an assortment of cookies, rolls, everyday cakes and special cakes like fruit cakes around the festive season, Vi said not only did she miss the monthly pocket money earned from slaving away in the kitchen but she missed catching up with community members, some of whom she’d known for years.
“I’ve been bringing my cakes to the Riverwood Markets for nearly 40 years,” she said.
When I first went with my late husband Eric, I saw there was no food available and so the next month I baked and bought in cakes for sale.
“I had customers lining up in front of me and everything I cooked, went in a flash.
“Now they check out all the treats, some you can’t even buy anymore, such as Anzac biscuits, sultana loaf, iced fruit cakes, lamingtons, traditional sponges and gingerbread houses to name a few, and most customers love to stop and have a chat as well.”
Getting a hand now from daughter Debra whom Vi says is a fantastic baker herself, she said she had no plans to pack away her apron.
“I’m not retiring, no way, everyone needs to keep doing something; I look forward to the baking and making people happy, it doesn’t take up much time.”
On the first Saturday of the month at Riverwood Community Centre, the next Riverwood Markets will be on August 3 from 9am-2pm, with all trash and treasure seekers invited to enjoy a sausage sizzle, fresh cuppa and a browse through the stalls featuring a range of new and pre-loved items.
