Torch burning bright as ever on 103rd birthday

TORCH has celebrated its 103rd birthday after the company was founded by Leslie Alexander Engisch who was 39 when he published the first edition on June 12, 1920, less than two years after the end of the First World War when Bankstown was mainly rural and had no community voice.

He wrote: “This journal will give due prominence to local progress and events, will devote space to interesting topical subjects and general information … it will voice the aspirations of those who have the interests and the advancement of the district at heart … should the necessity arise, the Torch will be found quite ready for the fray and prepared to battle sturdily for what it considers is best for the community.”
The Torch has always had a strong voice which caused it be blown up and burnt to the ground on Easter Saturday in 1955, with the courts finding it was a deliberate act to silence it.
In 103 years, it has only had five editors and is now run by the fourth generation of the family, directors Trent and Christian Engisch, with father John as Chairman.
While the Bankstown community has changed and evolved with the times since 1920, the Torch is produced both in print and now online where it is available in 14 different languages.
