Top player now coach

A FORMER Australian junior basketball representative and Under 14 Girls coach at Bankstown Bruins, Michele Austin, attended her fourth basketball nationals last week as coach of the NSW Metro U16 Girls in the Under 16 National Championships in Perth.

With close to 10 years’ experience in the WNBL, Michele’s basketball prowess is commendable.
She even co-captained the Australian Junior team alongside Shelley Gorman, leading them to their first-ever medal at the World Championships in 1989 – a remarkable bronze achievement.
As a Condell Park local, Austin has been an integral part of her community for over 15 years, actively contributing to her home basketball association nurturing young talent.
The Picnic Point Public School teacher of 28 years, coaches 11 school teams, with many of them ending up in representative sides.
She said she had a ball coaching at and watching the national championships in Perth.
“Our team did extremely well but we came up against some very tough teams,” she said.
“We were hoping to medal this year after winning gold last year but lost the bronze medal in overtime, coming fourth overall, while our NSW Metro U16 Boys side scored the bronze.
“It was great to see young Bankstown Bruins player Kaila Proctor make our State’s U16 side, along with Antonio Browne who made the U16 Boys side and Noah Keogh and Max Vernardos for making the reserve side.”
