Tips for growing your own food, saving cash

STOP paying for food that you can grow yourself – that’s the message from Permaculture Sydney West who will be presenting a free ‘Composting and Worm Farming’ workshop this Saturday at Auburn Centre for Community.

Workshop facilitators Vera and Greg have given advice to hundreds of residents in an effort to make Cumberland and greater Sydney more sustainable communities.
“We’ll be offering simple tips to get you on your way and save money,” Vera said.
“For example, it’s so expensive to buy herbs – $5 or $6 for a small bunch – yet they’re so easy to grow anywhere, on a balcony for example or any sunny spot and they grow quickly just like weeds.
“Once you discover how easy it is, you’ll never buy herbs again.”
The course will cover all the basics of composting and worm farming including how to build soil, grow in small spaces and end up with your own food that is organic and nutritious.
“We’ll be showing you how to turn kitchen scraps into food and how to spend your leisure time gainfully; it’s ideal for grandparents or those with small children so you can be teach them gardening basics,” Vera said.
“These are skills everyone should have; we need to get away from processed foods laden with sugar, fat and salt, it’s one of the reasons why diabetes is becoming an epidemic.”
Sponsored by Cumberland Council, the course is on offer this Saturday, May 8, 10am-12noon, with bookings essential before noon this Thursday, May 6.
Bookings: 8757 9000 or cumberland.nsw.gov.au.
• CUMBERLAND residents receive a $50 rebate for any compost bin or worm farm purchased.
