Tinkling ivories in entry for Lockdown Arts Fest

HE was disappointed that he couldn’t sit for his Grade Four Piano exam because of the lockdown – that was until his family saw Sydney Catholic Schools was on the hunt for creative works to be showcased in their upcoming ‘Lockdown Arts Festival’.

Since then, Charles Leo, 9, who attends St Peter Chanel Catholic Primary School in Regents Park, has definitely had a spring in his step.
Dad Alex said they were thrilled Charles was able to show off his latest skills and creative talent performing ‘Kitten ‘n’ mousin’ on the keys’ by Catherine Rollin, though not in the way originally intended.
“He will be able to sit for his piano exams at a later date but this opportunity to demonstrate his success was available right now and one we could do from home,” Alex said.
“He is definitely looking forward to being back inside the classroom as he hadn’t been at the school for very long before lockdown was announced, though had already made some good friends.
“We were in Homebush before but very happy to move to the Auburn area early this year as the school and community have been so welcoming.”
Charles said: “I only survived learning from home by playing the piano and engaging with my teacher through online zoom music lessons.”
Already catching the eye of organisers, his festival entry is among the five categories of visual arts, literature, drama, dance and music.
With great prizes up for grabs, individuals, groups, classes or families are also invited to enter, with entries closing at 2pm on Friday, October 15.
