‘Three generations’ of fans cheer on Matildas

THERE were three generations of the family of Lidcombe Waratah FC’s Caroline Staples at the Matildas’ first World Cup soccer match again Ireland last Thursday night and they were not disappointed.

Caroline, who is also one of the organisers of the ‘friendly’ Supporteroo matches in which Matilda fans play fans from the other competing nations, said they were thrilled with the win but it was not as exciting as the Matildas’ match against France the week before.
“We weren’t able to play our open attacking football style; Ireland parked the bus and tried to muscle us off the ball,” she said.
“They were quite physical, pushing us close to the edge and it disrupted our game.
“The same thing happened to us when we played Scotland in April but then we went on to beat Spain and England.”
Caroline said it was sad to not have Sam Kerr playing but there was plenty of talent in the rest of the side.
“We’ve got some stunning players who are less known so it’s going to get a lot more exciting,” she said.
Caroline will travel to Brisbane to watch the Matildas take on Nigeria on Thursday before heading to Melbourne to watch the clash with Canada on July 31.
