Thousands to enjoy biggest one-day showcase of Africa

CONNECTING the vibrant and diverse cultures of Africa, the biggest one-day showcase held annually in Sydney, the Africultures Festival will come alive at Sydney Olympic Park next Saturday, May 7, 10am-6pm.

While about 2,000 people attended the first event in 2008, it has steadily grown to become one of the largest community events on the Western Sydney calendar, attracting over 30,000 visitors a year.
The festival – part of Park Sounds – will highlight the vibrant music, diverse arts, cultural performances, stalls and authentic tastes and smells that will transform Cathy Freeman Park into an African village.
Creating a soul-stirring vibe, the Kilimanjaro and Serengetti stages will feature the exquisite talents of African musicians, artists, dancers and drummers.
Performers include True Vibenation, offering an irresistible blend of soul, afrobeat and hip hop backed by big bass beats and live horns; and Rara X & Nes Afara, Zimbabwean-born and Western Sydney-raised brothers whose music is based on traditional hip hop with a modern twist.
There will be an African Market Place with over 30 commercial and information stalls selling African products, such as clothing, fabrics, jewellery, homewares and accessories, while you enjoy the delights of the Nile Food Court featuring the best cuisines from across the continent as well as delicacies you won’t find in any Sydney restaurant.
Workshops, panels, a fashion parade, a children’s activity area and sport including the Africultures Cup, a one-day six a side soccer tournament for female teams, are also among in the highlights.
