Premier joins thousands at mosque for Eid prayer

SHOWERY weather did little to dampen the enthusiasm of the thousands of worshippers who flocked to Lakemba Mosque last Wednesday for the annual Eid-Al-Adha Prayer.

Over 20,000 people braved the elements including political, religious, business and community leaders.
NSW Premier Chris Minns and Opposition Leader Mark Speakman were among the VIPs, along with local MPs Tony Burke (representing Prime Minister Anthony Albanese), Jihad Dib and Sophie Cotsis, as well as Mayor Bilal El-Hayek.
Premier Minns was full of praise for the wonderful, Muslim community of Lakemba, while Mr Burke conveyed a message from Prime Minister Albanese, praising Muslim Australians for the role they have played in “strengthening and enriching our diverse society.”
Ms Cotsis described Eid as a “very important occasion of peace and sacrifice” and also acknowledged the local community for their charity “not just in this area, but across NSW”.
Mr Dib thanked his colleagues from the different political parties for their presence on the day, confirming “what we see today is an example of support for multiculturalism and diversity of faith across all political aisles”.He also pointed out to the assembled crowd that in spite of living in the best country in the world, “we should always remember those doing it tougher than we are”.
