Thousands celebrating thrilling Year of Dragon

THOUSANDS converged on Bankstown last Saturday to celebrate the Lunar New Year and welcome the Year of the Dragon.

The annual Lunar New Year Festival has been held for 18 years and has proven to be quite popular, with 13,335 people turning out to enjoy the fire-breathing acrobats, lion dancers, traditional food and flower stalls, the God and Goddess of Fortune and, of course, the watermelon-eating competition.
Mayor Bilal El-Hayek said Lunar New Year was an important event on the City’s calendar to recognise Bankstown’s large Vietnamese and Chinese communities and “we are lucky to have such a large Asian community here and it is fitting that we acknowledge the Year of the Dragon”.
