Thousands banned from leaving area

THOUSANDS of residents – except “authorised” workers and those in emergency and health fields – have been banned from leaving Cumberland from midnight tonight under tougher Covid-19 restrictions.

It is now only one of five local government areas where the additional stay-at-home rules are being enforced. Suburbs affected include Auburn, Berala, Chester Hill, Fairfield, Granville, Guildford, Guildford West, Holroyd, Homebush West, Lidcombe, Merrylands, Merrylands West, Regents Park, Rookwood and South Granville.
Premier Gladys Berejiklian says NSW is facing a “national emergency” with Covid-19 infections continuing to increase.
NSW recorded 136 new locally acquired cases of COVID-19 in the 24 hours to 8pm last night.
Of these locally acquired cases, 77 are linked to a known case or cluster – 65 are household contacts and 12 are close contacts – and the source of infection for 59 cases is under investigation.
Fifty-three cases were in isolation throughout their infectious period and 17 cases were in isolation for part of their infectious period. Fifty-three cases were infectious in the community, and the isolation status of 13 cases remains under investigation.
There have been 1,782 locally acquired cases reported since June 16, when the first case in the Bondi cluster was reported.
There are currently 137 Covid-19 cases admitted to hospital, with 32 people in intensive care, 14 of whom require ventilation.
There were 86,620 COVID-19 tests reported to 8pm last night, compared with the previous day’s total of 85,185.
Federal MP for Blaxland, Jason Clare, says the next few weeks are going to be really hard for a lot of people not allowed to go work – under the latest restrictions – and many will struggle to pay the bills.
He said people were angry and frustrated, but it didn’t have to be this way if those governments did their job.
“The people of western Sydney did not cause this mess, it’s happening because the State Government took too long to lock down Sydney and the Federal Government failed on the vaccine rollout,” he said.
He also said Prime Minister Scott Morrison “stuffed up” the vaccine rollout.
“The Government has taken too long to buy enough vaccines to stop the virus running wild,” he said.
“We’re all paying the price for Scott Morrison’s incompetence.”
