Tennis association serving up a dinner for centenary

RECOLLECTIONS of the golden era of tennis will keep the expected large crowd enthralled and entertained when Canterbury Bankstown Tennis Association (CBTA) celebrates its centenary at a dinner and book sale in the ballroom at Bankstown Sports in April.

CBTA President since 2009 and on the tournament committee since 1967, Roger Pitt says the dinner is open to whomever has had a connection with the club.
“Those of us who’ve been associated with CBTA for a long time, will never forget those golden decades when tennis ‘boomed’ and the nearest court was just a short walk away,” he said.
“Those who did not play then, can never fully imagine the magnitude of the sport in this area where tennis seemed to be in the DNA of an overwhelming proportion of a tennis-obsessed population.”
Times change, however, with the 60s seeing about 5,000 registered players compared with a little over 1,000 today.
“It’s going to be a magical night with plenty of fascinating speakers, a wonderful sit down buffet and the chance to catch up with folk you may not have seen for decades,” Pitt said.
“We’ve got people coming from all over Australia and as I tell everyone, you only get one chance to go to a centenary.”
CBTA’s popular book, ‘A Centenary of Achievement’, will also be for sale on the night for $30.
To book the $65 ticket for the Saturday, April 30, dinner starting at 6.30pm as well as to pre-order the book, visit cbta.com.au or call Pitt on 0418 213 079.
