Tenants relieved as garbage finally cleared from complex

YOU don’t expect to move into a new apartment complex and have to wait six weeks for the garbage to be collected but that is what a group of elderly tenants had to battle after moving into Biara Avenue, Chester Hill, in early December.

However, less than a week after the Torch raised concerns, NSW Land and Housing Corporation swung into action last Wednesday, removing the accumulated rubbish and advised the council, who said the dumped the rubbish had made regular bin collections more difficult, that there was now clear access for regular collection.
Tenant Shelley Collard says the bins were overflowing and filling up the bin bay area with the responsibility for emptying the bins in dispute.
Shelley said the tenants were at their wits’ end and did not know where to turn as most didn’t drive and had health issues preventing them from taking the garbage removal into their own hands.
“It’s such a relief to have the garbage taken away and it took three big garbage trucks to clear it all up; we’re so happy now that we aren’t fighting flies, spiders and cockroaches every time we take out our garbage and look forward to regular garbage pick-ups.”
A NSW Land and Housing Corporation spokesperson said: “We were disappointed to learn of this issue and the difficulties Ms Collard experienced in having it addressed.
“We will work with residents to ensure rubbish and recycling at the property is managed appropriately moving forward.”
