Teen’s ‘Young Volunteer of Year’

CHESTER Hill High School student Nargis Karimi was speechless after being named as ‘Young Volunteer of the Year’ for the Mid Western Sydney region at a finalist ceremony last week.

Volunteer youth coordinator at the Australian Afghan Hassanian Youth Association (AAHYA), the 16-year-old coordinates activities supporting newly arrived migrants, refugees and asylum seekers.
She has supported projects for hundreds of young people including swimming programs, youth camps, martial arts lessons, homework support and tutoring at Dari language school. She said her goal was to help increase confidence, wellbeing, self-esteem, education and mental health of young Afghani people.
“When my name was called out as the Young Volunteer of the Year winner, I was so shocked I couldn’t speak,” she said.
“There were just so many deserving finalists and I didn’t think I had a chance.
“I have been volunteering at AAHYA for five years now, I am passionate about my role and hope to keep helping and making a difference in migrant communities.”
The Youth Humanitarian Award winner in 2022, Nargis was also Cumberland Young Citizen of the Year last year.
