Teens take on best in Pacific

Bruins basketballers Kira-May Filemu, Azaleeah Oloapu and Sienna Tutani have been selected to play for Samoa in the FIBA U17 Women’s Oceanic Championship in Papua New Guinea in October.

THREE Bankstown Bruins basketballers – Sienna Tutani, Kira-May Filemu and Azaleeah Oloapu – are set to take on the best in the Pacific after being selected as part of the Samoan team in the FIBA U17 Women’s Oceanic Championship in Papua New Guinea in October.

Bruins CEO Christian Gobolos said the Association was immensely proud of the teens over the level of their basketball skill progression and the high level of competition they faced each week.
“Their selection in the Samoan National team is a wonderful accomplishment and a testament to their dedication and the amount of work the girls have put into their game,” he said.
Sienna has been a rep player since U12s, and played for the Bankstown Bruins in the U18G JPL and NBL1 teams this year.
“This year is my final year of playing Junior reps. I’m happy to be able to end it on a high, winning Silver with NSW Metro at the U18 Australian Junior Championships (AJC) Nationals, and taking out the U18G JPL State Championship title with my Bruins team,” she said.
Azaleeah has been part of the Bruins junior rep program since 2016 and from an early age, her talent has been recognised.
She was the MVP (most valuable player) when Bankstown Bruins became the State Champions in her first year of playing with the Bruins and she holds her own in the state senior competitions.
Kira-May is extremely proud to once again be representing Samoa at the 2023 FIBA U17 Women’s Oceania Championships.
Playing for the Bankstown Bruins in the Metro Junior League and Junior Premier League, this year also saw her selected to play in the Youth League Senior Competition as well as the NBL1 East.
She was awarded Best Player and Best Forward in the U16 Championship Division B Awards.
“I’m very proud of how far I’ve come,” she said.
