The book is the result of a database developed over the last three years from research here and overseas, and even saw Mr Inglis travel to France, Belgium and Britain in 2019 where he took photos of the graves which appear in the book.
It won the HistoResearch: Researching our Local History award, with the runner up being Pamela Zopf, ‘Glenroy – One Hundred and Thirty Years of History’: A historical record and story of Glenroy House, on the corner of Fairfield Road and King Street, in Guildford West.
The Best Maintained Heritage Property was won by Luke Hickey and his home in Greystanes.
Mayor Steve Christou says acknowledging our heritage is a key cornerstone of the Cumberland area.
“I commend the winners on their excellent entries and for partaking in preserving and celebrating the history of our community,” he said.
“The Council received 135 entries between – a fantastic response and shows the importance being placed on our local heritage.”
Winner of the Keeper of the Stone (Children’s Heritage Award) award in division one, was Christian Constantinov (kindergarten), runner-up was Pragnya Jangam (kindergarten); division two and overall winner was Muhammad (Year 4), while runner-up was Olivia Omar (Year 4).
Tale of unsung war brave wins award
A FASCINATING insight into the local men who paid the ultimate sacrifice and gave their lives in the First World War, 1914-1918, Ron Inglis’ book ‘Auburn Remembers’ has won a Cumberland Local Heritage Award.
