Take steps to aid homeless

EVERYONE deserves a safe place to sleep but every night, 122,000 Australians have nowhere to call home.

You can help change that by walking 122,000 steps during National Homelessness Week, August 6-13, and collect sponsors to help you raise funds – no matter the size – to help people facing homelessness.
During the ‘Steps For Safe Homes’ initiative, you can walk fast or slow, solo or in a group but however you do it, you will be changing lives.
Taking part in the initiative for the first time this year, Mission Australia’s Rapid Rehousing Specialist for Cumberland, Amber Singh said she was encouraging all of her staff to take part too as every bit of money helped.
She said homelessness was the worst she’d ever seen after joining Mission Australia in 2008.
“The last 12 months have been such a challenge as more and more people search for a safe, affordable home,” she said.
“It’s the cost of living impacts with groceries and petrol prices up and private rentals are skyrocketing.
“Centrelink payments of between $700 and $1100 a fortnight, are not keeping up and more and more people need our help.”
Amber said Mission Australia had a ‘No Wrong Door’ policy and would not turn away people.
They even try to help those who are working and earning under a certain threshold as well as others who are working on a bridging visa.
“There is always something we can do to help but it’s getting harder; campaigns such as ‘Steps for Safe Homes’ are vital because they allow us to assist more people living on the brink,” she said.
