Swim club wins first World bronze medal

WHILE in their Australian ‘off season’, four Merrylands Amateur Swimming Club enjoyed record success last week at the World Aquatics Masters Championships in Japan.

The peak meet for Masters swimmers worldwide with around 10,000 participants from 100 countries, saw the Merrylands group win a medal, achieve three new personal bests and seven best season times.
Club President Graham Edwards said Alison Johnston took home her first and the club’s first World Championships medal with bronze in the 200m Butterfly.
“Alison was also a finalist in the 100m Butterfly in her fastest time since 2018, finishing 10th, and swam a season-best time in the 100m Freestyle,” he said.
Kylee Murray achieved new personal best times in the 100m, 200m and 400m Freestyle and placed 19th in the 400m Freestyle.
Also enjoying a great meet, Ian Wilson’s 100m was his best time since 2016, the 200m his best since 2018, the 400m his best since 2018 and the 800m his best time since 2019.
His best placing was 18th in the 800m Freestyle.
Steven Nguyen swam his fastest 50m Butterfly this season.
Edwards said the club enjoyed a diverse membership across age, gender and cultural backgrounds reflecting the local community.
“Swimming is an important part of the Australian sporting and leisure landscape and our club offers a range of swimming activities including club races, and squad training as well as the popular Learn to Swim.”
