Swim centre set to be revitalised

MERRYLANDS Swim Centre will undergo a multi-million dollar transformation.

Planning for the refurbishment can now get underway with Cumberland Council allocating $14.6 million to the project.
A Cumberland Council report stated that once the detailed design process was finalised and the cost of the refurbishment quantified, the council will prepare submissions to the state and federal governments seeking applicable funding to assist with the delivery of the Merrylands Swim Centre refurbishment program.
Cr Ola Hamed said the facility was an important community asset and utilised by many local schools and, of course, the successful Merrylands Swimming Club.
Supporting the refurbishment, she said unfortunately the pool’s amenities reflected the age of its construction and it needed extensive renovation.
“It’s an ageing facility and problems will continue to resurface … costing the council more in the long run,” she said.
“Lane ropes, lighting and change rooms are not up to standard … pool covers need replacing and the disability facilities are not up to scratch.
“And with hotter temperatures, the time is now for a modern aquatic centre in Merrylands.”
Cr Steve Christou said the pool has been in need of an upgrade for 25 years and it must urgently go ahead for the enjoyment of the community.
“We need to ensure it’s not just a pipe dream,” he said.
“We need to look at funding to accelerate the works.”
Cr Joe Rahme said the pool was urgently needed to be modernised to meet demands of ever-growing community.
