Surprise visitor to park ahead of Wetlands Day

STUNNING images of the critically endangered Curlew Sandpiper (pictured) – a migratory shorebird that travels over 10,000km to arrive in Australia each spring – have been snapped at Sydney Olympic Park ahead of World Wetlands Day tomorrow.

Celebrated annually on February 2, World Wetlands Day aims to raise global awareness about the vital role of wetlands for native flora and fauna.
Sydney Olympic Park Wetlands Manager Swapan Paul says the sighting highlights the success of the park’s wetlands restoration program.
“Sometimes we’re even lucky enough to get visits from critically endangered wildlife and our aim is to give them a safe place to rest and put on weight before embarking on their next journey,” he said.
Sydneysiders are encouraged to get up close and personal with the wetlands through a range of activities tomorrow.
