Students to take on world in robotics

A TEAM of three students and two teachers are hoping to put Bankstown Girls High School (BGHS) on the world map this Saturday if they win the Universal Robotics Challenge World Final in Japan.

They were first invited to compete in Japan in 2019 but didn’t win a place that year, according to Maths teacher Julieanne Doai who will accompany the students to Japan tomorrow, with Maths Head Teacher Vicky Saisanas.
Ms Doai said the stage five teenage students – Yelleina Alabaso, Yin Yin La and Kimmy Tran – were incredibly excited and working hard to complete their robot.
“It’s extra challenging this year as all participants were asked to design a new robot based on the idea of stacking,” she said.
“They pick up packages and the higher they stack them, the more points they will receive; our girls are in the advanced division so their robot also needs to work autonomously, completely independent of them.
“We are confident they will do extremely well.”
Relieving Principal Lisa Edwards said it was a wonderful opportunity for the students to get experience competing at an international level.
“We’re hoping it will inspire them to go on to achieve great things in their lives,” she said.
