Student makes cut to come third

TAFE NSW Granville butchery student Joseph Maberley has placed third in the national leg of the International World Butchers Apprentice and Young Butcher Competition, held during the Sydney Easter Show.

Working side by side with some of Australia’s best up and coming butchers, he was one of 21 competitors vying for the win.
“I am so proud to have been awarded third place at such a prestigious competition,” he said.
“I was up against some amazing competitors from around Australia, so to even place is an honour and a true testament to the skills I learnt at TAFE NSW Granville.
“Although it’s a shame that I just missed out on going to America for the international competition, there’s always next time.”
Joseph, who completed Certificate III in Meat Processing (Retail Butcher) at TAFE, works at 1888 Certified in Double Bay and was recently awarded Apprentice of the Year at the inaugural TAFE NSW Excellence Awards.
Introduced to the industry in 2016, the International World Butchers Apprentice and Young Butcher Competition is growing.
Regional finals were held in Granville last month, with the winners from last week’s national competition heading to the international competition which will be held in Sacramento in America next year.
