Stitches up way to HSC showcase win

A BEAUTIFULLY designed costume by Amelia Semovski, has been chosen for a HSC showcase of ingenious solutions developed by young, future-oriented, design thinkers at Powerhouse Ultimo.

The costume – completed as part of Amelia’s HSC studies at La Salle College, Bankstown – is a contemporary interpretation of a folk outfit traditionally worn at Macedonian dancing festivals (igranki) and you will be able to see it for yourself at the museum from March 4 at Shape 2022, a selection of outstanding major projects from the Higher School Certificate’s Design and Technology, Industrial Technology, and Textiles and Design courses.
Inspired by the work of Italian contemporary fashion designer Riccardo Tisci, with decorative beading techniques and the rich culture of Macedonia, the costume has an abundance of creative details including beading, embroidery, gathering, appliqué and surface cording, and being 100 per cent cotton, is breathable, durable and comfortable for high intensity dancing.
“The most enjoyable experience by far was the feeling of achievement and seeing my costume come together when all the pieces were finally complete,” Amelia said.
NSW Education Standards Authority CEO Paul Martin said the works reflected the high level of critical thinking and creativity, and ”never cease to amaze me”.
“I encourage schools, families and the public to visit Powerhouse and see for themselves the creativity, innovation and talents of these young people,” he said.
“It’s an insight into what students care about, what excites them and what they want for their world and future generations.”
