He says ANZAC Day this year will certainly be an improvement on the last one where he held a service in the driveway of his home.
“We used to have two services, one the Sunday before and then on ANZAC Day in the Courthouse Reserve in Bankstown but we certainly can’t do that this year because the marshalling and roping off of the area would be a big headache,” he said.
“So we’re taking the safe approach but really, I think it’s pretty ordinary that the Government is okay with 60,000 people at the Sydney Royal Easter Show and 30,000 at the football but has put such strict limits on ANZAC DAY.
“I can tell you that I would not want to be a Covid marshall on ANZAC Day in the city because I know how upset many of the veterans are and some of them may not be very polite or co operative.”
Joining the Corps of the Royal Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers in the Australian Army in 1962, Terry was posted to Malaysia in 1966-69 and Vietnam in 1970-71 before returning to Australia and retiring as a Warrant Officer in 1983.
There is one remaining veteran based in Sydney from his Vietnam unit.
“He lives in San Souci and we catch up on Vietnam Veterans Day at the Sports Club every year,” he said.
“I’m certainly looking forward to next year when it should be a hell of a lot better, just a fair dinkum ANZAC Day where we can all march and don’t have to limit numbers.”
Still have long way to go before ‘fair dinkum’ day
IF it was up to Bankstown RSL sub-branch president Terry Corcoran, we would forget about 2020 and return to the happy, Covid-free event of 2019.
