Still deliver quality, affordable meals

AT the height of the service in the early 2000s, Meals on Wheels Auburn staff were cooking up about 120 meals a day.

Now the demand has shrunk to about 40 meals a day, which could see the service disbanded if numbers continue to decrease.
Manager Thanh Ho has worked for the service – which was established in 1966 – for 18 years and believes the change in demographics in the area is responsible for client numbers dropping off.
“Twenty years ago, there were a lot more English clients that have either moved out of the area or moved into nursing homes,” he explained.
“A lot more migrant families live here now and they tend to have households with two, three and four generations. The older ones look after the babies and when they need more help, the younger generation looks after them and so there is less need for the service.”
However, Mr Ho believes that if more people knew what great value for money the meals are, more would want to get on board.
“It costs only $7 for a main meal (such as roast lamb, chicken, beef or pork plus fish, pies and casseroles etc), a 100ml juice and dessert (mostly cakes and puddings),” he said.
“There is such a big variety that changes all the time, the meals are daily fresh and nutritious and our delivery drivers drop them straight to your door.”
